Windows Server 2012 Essentials : Media Streaming Problems?

Lumia 820I recently got myself a Nokia Lumia 820, and one of the benefits of having this Windows phone, (apart from looking like the coolest kid in school) is that i get to use the very funky My Server App. This App is nothing new of course, and SBS Essentials (and lest we forget, Home Server) also had similar Apps, very useful they are too, if like me, you are completely unable to function unless you have access to your server, from everywhere. The 2012 Era App has some differences over the 2011 version, but my post today is not really about the App itself. I was just using the App as a nice way to show off about my new phone.

So, to business. I was reading a forum question about Media Streaming, and how to go about troubleshooting.

Windows Server 2012 Essentials, An Error prevented the Dashboard from opening

Windows Server 2012 Essentials LogoThis is an issue that has caught me out once or twice in my testing and general messing about with Essentials over the last age, and also someone in the forum just posted a question along these lines so i thought it worth a post. I have been struggling with a bit of ‘writers block’* recently and this seemed to be something easy to get back into blogging again with.

* I do not consider myself to be a writer, merely a lazy admin who had nothing interesting to say.

Manually creating a Certificate Request Windows Server 2012 Essentials (SBS 2011)

padlockFollowing on from my recent post about SSL issues, another topic of conversation is the actual SSL installation process for the RWA.

Again i have blogged on that before, and the new Essentials 2012 wizard makes the process a lot lot easier. However if you get stuck with generating a CSR (Certificate Signing Request) then you can always use IIS to do this for you.

SBS, Essentials, RWA and SSL

padlockI have blogged before about setting up the RWA on Essentials, we all remember that mammoth post right?

The countless hours we wasted trying to make the wizard work, troubleshooting certificates with GoDaddy, Enom, Microsoft and that’s before you worry about where your domain name is hosted. Thankfully, or should it be, mercifully, in Essentials 2012 the whole wizard process is a lot cleaner and dare i say more intuitive.

That is, however, unless you lack an understanding of what this stuff actually does and how it works.

Renew your SSL Certificate : SBS 2011 Essentials

sbse-conIt has been a year since i first went through the process of installing a Third Party SSL certificate onto my SBS Essentials server.

SBS 2011 Essentials – Manually Installing SSL Certificate

sbse-conI have been spending some time answering questions in the SBS Essentials forum over at TechNet recently, and i noticed that there is still a lot of outstanding questions and issues with the Remote Access wizard for SBS Essentials, especially surrounding installing an SSL Certificate.

One of the big headaches comes when you have a domain with one of the ‘supported’ registrars, Enom or GoDaddy. Read more of this post

Quick Fix: SBS 2008 ‘Sites’ Self Signed Certificate Expired

SBS2008Please note this article is not for renewing expired certificates used with remote web access!

I had a call today from a partner IT firm who we work with sometimes that had an issue on an SBS 2008 Server. One of the default SSL Certificates had expired, and in turn knocked out Sage 200 that was installed and running on this server. Sage links into the Default website and some of its operations require an SSL certificate. I wont pretend to understand what or why or even how because what i know about Sage can be written on top of a pin head with a power drill.

However, i did manage to help said partner replace his SSL Certificate and make Sage a happy bunny again.

Firstly i found that on my own SBS 2008 server,
